- Urban and Rural Photography -

Group Info

Welcome to #Urban-and-Rural!

This group is dedicated to Urban and Rural photography only. The idea of creating the group came from seeing that, even with some urban groups out there, it was really difficult to find one dedicated to both forms of photography.

What is Urban and Rural?

Urban and Rural focuses on the surroundings of an area, rather than individual elements within.

City Life

Just because a photo was taken in a city, doesn't automatically make it a city life piece. Therefore, shots of traffic lights or zebra crossings won't be accepted. City life is all about the way we live, ie what goes on in a city. This can relate closely to street photography in some aspects, but not all. City life can show a city in operation - traffic, trains and other aspects.

Cityscapes and Skylines

Obviously, these are the urban equivalent of landscapes. If it doesn't involve buildings... it should probably go into 'Country Life' instead :)

Country Life

Similar to City Life, but obviously in the countryside. So, it shows how people life in rural areas. It can also be used for landscapes or for showing vast areas of countryside.

Gardens, Parks and Cemeteries

This is not for close up shots of headstones, or flowers, or monuments, or benches, or grass :B This is for showing the whole, surrounding area of either a garden, park or cemetery.

Industrial

This one is pretty simple. Industrial stuff :B ie, industrial areas, cranes, railways etc.

Misc

If you don't think the piece fits anywhere else but could still be considered U&R, then this is the place it should go.

Urban Exploration

People seem to misunderstand this gallery the most and usually has the most miscats. This gallery is for places that are abandoned, wasted, out of use, ruined, out of reach normally etc etc. Places like abandoned warehouses, rail ways and the like.

That's about it. If you have any questions, then PLEASE ask :)

Also! Submissions have gone up from three, to five per week! So get submitting :dummy:

Urban & Rural Group Overhaul

Tue May 8, 2012, 10:43 AM
Hey guys, this is ^MC-Frizzle reporting!

We've started with giving #Urban-and-Rural a much-needed overhaul today. Even though you will not initially notice anything, I can ensure you that changes are underway! To give you some idea of what's coming up, following is an estimated schedule of upcoming changes:
  • Admin area changes (1 to 2 weeks)
  • In order to keep the group running streamlined, we need to improve our admin area first. In the time frame, we will be writing guidelines, tutorials and how-to's for current and future group admins, and working on general restructuring of the admin area.
  • Front-end pages changes (1 to 2 weeks)
  • We will take a closer look at our front-end pages - the front page, about us, gallery, favorites and journals sections of the group. Out-of-date information will be updated and changes will be made to the layout to help making browsing the group an easier experience.
  • Recruiting new group admins (2 weeks)
  • After we have completed the group overhaul, we will be recruiting new group admins! Group admins vote on incoming gallery submissions, write blog posts and ensure everything remains rolling smoothly. If you've got a passion for Urban & Rural Photography and always wanted to help out in the community, stay tuned for an update on this!
We will keep you informed of changes as they roll out. In the meantime, blog posts like the member feature and the monthly update will continue to be posted. :)

Thanks!

Member Feature #4 with Nujabes

Journal Entry: Sat May 19, 2012, 6:01 AM

Hello there

I'm =dekorAdum, and my duty at #Urban-and-Rural is to feature submitted artworks. Recently we decided to change the way we do it, and instead of themes & Featured folders, we decided to pick only one Member and make a little interview with them to get to know our members a little more and I'll feature amazing U&R photographers every second week!

Here is our next Featured Member, ~Nujabes

First of all, thank you so much ~Nujabes for taking time and let me interview you!

#1 When did you start taking Urban & Rural Photos?

I started taking urban photos just after my arrival in Hong Kong in 2009.

#2 What kind of equipment do you own for taking photos?

I have a Nikon D5000 with few lenses. For urban shots, I mainly use my Nikkor 18-200mm and my Sigma 10-20mm.

#3 Do you have a favourite Urban & Rural Photographer here on deviantART?

Curiously, I don't browse much urban photos on deviantART.
My favorite photographer in this field is Michael Wolf, but he doesn't have an account here.

#4 What are your favourites from your own gallery and why?

For graphic art I would choose :

because they are related to artist / piece of art that impressed me very deeply.

Regarding photography, I would choose :

I think it's because I like to see how the density and crowd can actually look calm and tidy when you take some distance from it.

#5 How or why did you start taking U&R related photos?

When I arrived in Hong Kong I was amazed by the unique urban environment there. The density of buildings combined with a great richness of details made me want to take my camera and record it..

And now more amazing photos from the deviant!

Stay tuned for the next Volume!
